When is the best time to graft grape seedlings? The survival rate of grafted grapes is high

Grape seedling cutting time

Grape seedlings are grown by open-air cuttings in early spring in March and April when the ground temperature reaches above 8-10℃. In addition, grape seedlings can also be grown by cuttings in summer in June-August when the vines grow to more than 5 nodes and the vines are semi-lignified. These two periods greatly increase the survival rate of grape seedling cuttings.

Grape seedling cutting method

Choose branches : Cut one-year-old branches in winter as cuttings. Each cutting branch should have 2-3 buds. For rare varieties, single buds can be used for cuttings. Secondly, cut the branches obliquely and dip the cut in naphthaleneacetic acid.

Soil selection : The grape seedling site should be flat, loose, close to water sources, and sandy loam with easy drainage and irrigation. It should also be convenient for later maintenance and management, and production paths and drainage ditches should be left.

Carry out cuttings : insert the treated branches obliquely into the soil two-thirds of the way at intervals and in the same direction. After cuttings, water until the soil is completely soaked, and then build a sunshade.

Precautions for Grape Seedling Cuttings

After the grape seedlings are grafted, a sunshade must be built, which is conducive to cold protection, heat preservation and moisture retention. Before it takes root and sprouts, the soil must be kept sufficiently moist, and attention should be paid to the prevention and control of diseases and pests. Generally, the cuttings will take root and sprout in about a month. After sprouting, the sunshade should be gradually removed, and only one strong branch bud should be left for the surviving branches.
