When to harvest onion seeds?

Onion Seed Harvest Time

It takes 8-9 months for onion seeds to grow from seedlings to maturity. They are usually harvested in May and June. They should be harvested in time when the onion leaves gradually turn yellow, the pseudostems gradually soften, the bulbs stop expanding excessively, and enter dormancy.

Onion Seed Origin

Onions grow all over the world. In my country, they are mainly produced in Fengxian County, Jiuquan County, Wuwei County, Jinxiang County, Shang County, Pingdu County, Yutai County, Xichang County, Dongchuan County, Yuanmou County and other places. Of course, they are also grown in Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Jilin, Heilongjiang and other places. Most onions are planted in autumn and then harvested in the spring of the following year.

Onion seed planting time and key points

1. Sow seeds at the right time

Onion sowing can be chosen around the beginning of autumn. The best sowing time is in early to mid-September each year. The climate is cool at this time and the germination rate is high. Sowing at this time is more suitable for later growth.

2. Sowing and seedling raising

Select the onion seeds, soak them in clean water, take them out after soaking, wrap the seeds with wet cloth, and then place them in a cool place of 20-24 degrees for germination. When the seeds turn white, sow them in time. You can use row sowing or broadcasting methods to sow. After leveling the bed surface, water it first, then sow the seeds evenly and cover them with a thin layer of soil.

3. Seedling management

After onions are sown, they will sprout in about 7-10 days. When most of the onions have sprouted, water them according to the soil moisture conditions to add enough water. When the onions grow two leaves, you can combine tillage and weeding with urea topdressing, and then irrigate to release the fertilizer effect.
