Time and method of planting sweet potatoes in the north

Sweet potato planting time in the north

Sweet potatoes in the north can be raised in mid-February, sown around the Qingming Festival, and harvested after frost. Because sweet potatoes are light-loving crops, they need 8-10 hours of light per day during their growth process, and sweet potatoes are not cold-resistant. The temperature and light in spring are more suitable, which is conducive to the vigorous growth of sweet potatoes.

Sweet potato planting method in the north

1. Soil conditions

Northern sweet potatoes prefer soil with good drainage, looseness and breathability. Choose deep and fertile soil under the sun and in the shelter from the wind. Before sowing, you can first plow 30-40 cm of the soil to loosen the soil, and then apply some base fertilizer. It is better to choose decomposed organic fertilizer to make the sweet potatoes germinate quickly.

2. Potato tuber processing

Before planting sweet potatoes in the north, you need to choose seed potatoes that are bright in color and free of pests and diseases. Soak them in carbendazim for 30 minutes to kill the pathogens inside and reduce the infection rate of the sweet potatoes. In addition, the sweet potato pieces should be placed in a warm place for germination.

3. Planting method

When planting sweet potatoes in the north, you need to first spray potassium permanganate solution on the soil to kill overwintering pests in the soil, then bury them in the soil, water them thoroughly, and cover them with a layer of ground film to keep the soil temperature at around 15 degrees to maintain normal growth of the sweet potatoes.

Precautions for planting sweet potatoes in the north

After sowing sweet potatoes in the north, they need to be covered with a layer of ground film to keep them warm and moist and prevent them from being damaged by frost. During the growth period, they need to be watered and fertilized in time to meet the sweet potatoes' needs for nutrients, but water accumulation is not allowed, otherwise it will affect the growth of the underground part.
