How to sow carnations

How to sow carnations

Prerequisites for planting carnations

The first thing to pay attention to when planting carnations in pots is to choose a tall pot with a large inner diameter. Mineral water bottles cannot be used. It can be planted in a clay pot or a purple sand pot. The soil should be rich in organic matter and have good drainage, but never apply concentrated fertilizer. Carnations are best planted in an environment with dry air, sufficient light and good ventilation. Avoid high temperature and humidity. The most suitable growth temperature is 19~21℃.

How to sow carnations

Seed propagation

The suitable temperature for seed sowing and germination is about 20 degrees Celsius, and it takes a long time for germination, generally 10 to 15 days. Generally, carnations will bloom about 140 days after sowing. The suitable growth temperature is between 5-20 degrees. If the temperature is higher than 30 degrees, the plant will stop growing or even die.

Cutting propagation

In addition, carnations can also be propagated by cuttings. When taking cuttings, you should choose plants that are pest-free, strong and have dense internodes. The time for cuttings should generally avoid the hot summer period, and the best time for cuttings is from late January to early February.

For cuttings, you can choose side branches about 8 cm long that grow from the middle of the branch. When picking cuttings, you should hold the side branches in your hand and break them down along the main branch so that the cuttings have node marks, which makes them easier to survive. Cuttings can be planted immediately after harvesting or the cuttings can be wetted with water before planting. The soil for cuttings is general garden soil mixed with a small amount of rice husk ash or sandy soil.

After planting, water should be applied frequently to maintain humidity and provide shade. The room temperature should be 10-15℃. The plants will take root in about 20 days and can be transplanted and planted after one month.

Through the above methods, I believe everyone has a certain understanding of the sowing method of carnations. We can try to cultivate beautiful carnations in early spring!
