Sweet potato planting time and method

Sweet potato planting time and method

Sweet potato planting time

The best time to plant sweet potatoes is from April to May each year, because sweet potatoes are light-loving crops. They need 8-10 hours of light per day during their growth process. Sweet potatoes are not cold-resistant and are suitable for growing in a warm environment. The temperature and light at this time are more suitable, which is conducive to the vigorous growth of sweet potatoes.

Sweet potato planting method

1. Soil conditions

Sweet potatoes prefer loose, fertile, breathable, and easily irrigated soil. When growing sweet potatoes, you need to first plow 30-40 cm of the soil and break it up into small pieces to help the growth of sweet potato tubers. You can also apply some decomposed organic fertilizer to the soil to make the sweet potatoes germinate quickly.

2. Potato tuber processing

When planting sweet potatoes, you need to choose seed potatoes that are brightly colored, plump, and free of pests and diseases. Then cut the seed potatoes into small pieces of 100-250 grams, and soak them in carbendazim for 30 minutes to kill the bacteria on the surface of the tubers and reduce the infection rate of the sweet potatoes. The sweet potato pieces should also be placed in a warm place for germination.

3. Planting method

When planting sweet potatoes, you need to first spray potassium permanganate solution on the soil to kill overwintering pests in the soil, then bury the sweet potato pieces in the soil, water them once, and cover them with a layer of mulch to keep the soil temperature at around 15 degrees to maintain normal growth of the sweet potatoes.

Sweet potato planting precautions

Sweet potatoes can be planted in almost any season except the summer when the temperature is high and the light intensity is high. However, continuous rainy weather should be avoided during planting, because such weather will reduce the inventory of sweet potato seedlings and reduce the yield of sweet potatoes.
