Freesia flower post-harvest treatment method

Freesia flower post-harvest treatment method

Main characteristics of freesia cut flowers

Freesia is very sensitive to ethylene and fluorine. A drop of fluorine in the water will cause the tips of the flowers and leaves to dry up and turn brown, and prevent the buds from opening. The biggest taboo is that freesia cannot be placed together with daffodils, as the secretions from the daffodil stems will shorten the life of the freesia.

When to pick

When the first flower on the inflorescence is blooming and the color is obvious, and the second flower is in bud, it is the best time to pick it. Be sure to cut before the second flower blooms.

Vase life

In ordinary households, there is no need to cut the flowers and put them in a vase, because the flowers of potted freesia are often much larger than those in the vase. If freesia cut flowers are handled properly, their lifespan is 7 to 14 days.

Fresh-keeping treatment method

The following methods can extend the shelf life of freesia cut flowers by 3 to 5 days.

Lowering pH:

Use citric acid to adjust the pH of deionized water and good quality tap water (do not use mineral water) to 3.5 . Ensure that the water is clean and does not contain fluoride.

Professional nutrient solution:

1 -Methylcyclopropene ( 1 - MCP ) treatment.

Bottle holding liquid:

4% sucrose + 0.015% aluminum sulfate + 0.2% magnesium sulfate + 0.1% potassium sulfate; or add 250 mg of 8 -hydroxyquinoline citrate + 70 mg of chlormequat ( CCC ) + 50 mg of silver nitrate + 60 mg of sucrose per liter of water.

Storage and transportation technology:

Freesia can be stored at 2 °C and 90% humidity for about 1 week.

Flowers are easily bruised, so be careful when handling.

During transportation and storage, use storage and preservation gel.

How retailers and consumers deal with this

Retailers

The flower stems were cut again and placed in a hydrated treatment solution containing silver thiosulfate ( STS ) for 2 hours.

Place in professional preservative solution.

consumer

Place the flowers in a well-ventilated environment at a temperature of 2~5 ℃.

Freesia cut flowers should be kept away from ripe fruits to prevent the ethylene from the fruits from interfering with their growth. It is important not to place freesias in the same vase with other flowers, especially daffodils.
