Is the loquat tree a shade-loving or sun-loving plant?

Do loquat trees prefer shade or sun?

The loquat tree is a sun-loving plant. It belongs to the genus Eriobotrya of the subfamily Maloideae of the family Rosaceae. Because it likes light, when growing it, place it in the sun so that it can absorb sufficient sunlight and make its fruit grow bigger.

Loquat tree basking in the sun

Loquat trees can be exposed to the sun, because the characteristics of loquat trees are that they like the sun and tolerate the shade, so light is beneficial to the development of flower buds and fruit coloring. Loquat trees need to increase light from flowering to the rapid development of young fruits, but its fruits need diffuse light. Therefore, increasing reflected light is beneficial to fruit growth, but you should pay attention to its mature fruits. If they encounter strong sunlight, the fruits will shrivele, so in the case of strong sunlight, you need to use a shade net to block the light.

Growth habits of loquat trees

1. Temperature

Loquat prefers a warm and humid climate. Low temperature will affect its flowering and fruiting, while high temperature will slow the growth of its branches, leaves and roots and cause poor growth of seedlings. In the middle and late stages of fruit development, hot and dry weather will cause it to suffer from sunscald. In addition, high temperature will reduce the sugar content of loquat.

2. Lighting

Loquat seedlings prefer scattered light, so a shed should be built to provide shade when cultivating newly planted loquat seedlings. However, adult loquat trees require sufficient light because it is beneficial to the development of their fruit. However, if the trunk is exposed to strong direct sunlight, the branches and leaves will be burned and withered.

3. Moisture

Loquat prefers an environment with moist air and abundant water. It needs more water during the fruit development period and the new shoot growth period. However, if there is too much water during the fruit ripening period, problems such as fruit cracking, bland taste, and late ripening are prone to occur. Moreover, loquat is most afraid of waterlogging. When cultivating on flat ground, it is necessary to prevent waterlogging and root rot.
