How to prune potted roses

When to prune potted roses

During the maintenance process, potted roses need to be pruned once every early spring, mainly focusing on the branches. Weak branches, duplicate branches, and diseased branches should be cut off to promote the growth of new branches. The remaining flowers should be cut off in time after the flowering period, otherwise they will not only be unsightly, but will also continue to consume nutrients and be detrimental to the germination of new buds. In addition, the excess side buds should be cut off, leaving only one main bud.

Pruning branches and leaves : Cut the branches of the rose to the same height, prune lightly when they are small, and prune hard when they are big. Don't let it grow too high. It is best to control the height at 50-60 cm. Old branches, weak branches, diseased branches, etc. can be cut off at any time during the growth process.

Tips for pruning potted roses

1. Early spring pruning

Every early spring, when the branches have not yet sprouted, the first pruning should be carried out. At this time, the weak branches, repeated branches and diseased branches should be cut off to reduce the loss of nutrients and be more conducive to the growth of new branches. In addition, it is best to turn the soil once at this time to remove the weeds in the pot soil so that the plants can grow better.

2. Pruning after flowering

After each bloom, the remaining flowers should be cut off in time. Leaving them will not only affect the appearance, but also continue to consume nutrients. In addition to the remaining flowers, the two compound leaves under the flowers should also be cut off during pruning to prevent them from growing weak branches, otherwise the flowers will be deformed. Or the flowers can be cut off 10 cm away from the root system, and the excess branches can be cut off together to save nutrients and allow new buds to sprout.

3. Side bud pruning

During the flowering period, you will find that some branches have multiple buds. Don't be reluctant at this time. Cut off the poorly growing ones in time and leave only the good ones. Leave only two or three new buds on each main branch and cut off the rest. In addition, cut off the extra side buds, leaving only one main bud to avoid unnecessary nutrient consumption.

Precautions for pruning potted roses

As long as you cut off the dead branches and rotten leaves of the rose, you can create opportunities for the development of new branches and leaves. Branches and leaves that are not needed can be cut off directly. After the main branches are separated from the side branches, the side branches can be pruned to leave more space for the growth of the main branches, retain the new buds on the branches and leaves, and cut off the remaining leaves after flowering in time to create the best rose shape.
