Methods and precautions for propagating succulent plants by cuttings

How to propagate succulents

The commonly used propagation methods for succulents include grafting, sowing, root cuttings, division, leaf cuttings, cuttings and cutting growth points. Among them, the survival rate of leaf cuttings is relatively high, and sowing propagation is more commonly used.

How to propagate succulent plants by cuttings

If the succulent plants are in the north, you can generally choose to take cuttings after the Qingming Festival until early June. If they are in the south, you can choose to take cuttings from the end of March until early May. The specific cutting propagation method is as follows:

1. Select the leaves

The leaves of succulents are mostly thick and full. They can be propagated by leaf cuttings. Choose healthy leaves that are not infected by pests and diseases. Be careful when picking them and pick them intact.

2. Modulate the matrix

The substrate used for leaf cuttings should be loose and breathable, and preferably contain certain nutrients. You can use special soil for succulents, or you can mix peat soil, perlite and river sand. Make sure to disinfect it before use.

3. Take cuttings

After the substrate is prepared, you can insert the prepared leaves into it. You can insert it obliquely into the soil. Pay attention to controlling the depth. It doesn't need to be too deep. The base of the leaves can touch the soil. Or you can directly place the leaves flat on it with the front of the leaves facing up. In the later stage, provide a well-ventilated and warm environment, so that it will take root and survive soon.

Precautions for cuttings of succulent plants

1. When grafting succulents, you must choose soil with good drainage and pay attention to proper shading, so that adventitious roots will grow after a period of time.

2. If you want to successfully propagate succulents by cuttings, you must choose healthy succulents without insects and diseases. Be sure to dry the wounds before propagating them, and then propagate them after the wounds have healed.

3. Small buds and roots will grow at the tips of the leaves of succulent plants. Wait until the mother leaves are completely withered before transplanting.
