How to change the soil of banyan bonsai

Banyan bonsai soil changing time

Usually, the soil of banyan bonsai needs to be changed every 3-4 years. The specific time for changing the soil is from April to May in late spring every year. When changing the soil, some of the old soil of the plant's root system should be removed, and some old roots and rotten roots should be cut off.

Generally speaking, it is not recommended to change the soil of banyan bonsai in summer, because the temperature in summer is relatively high and changing the soil is not conducive to the recovery of the plant, so it is best to do it in the spring when all things revive.

Banyan bonsai soil replacement and transplanting

Banyan bonsai is generally chosen to be repotted between April and May each year. It is not suitable to repot the banyan bonsai in autumn to avoid damaging the root system of the plant.

How to change the soil for banyan bonsai

1. First take the banyan bonsai out of the pot, keep the soil at the roots as much as possible, observe the protruding roots, and trim off any rotten roots.

2. Banyan bonsai is tenacious in nature and does not have high requirements for soil. You can choose ordinary soil for cultivation, or a soil mixture with a ratio of 2:2:1 of garden soil: humus soil: sand.

3. Prepare a new flowerpot and fill it with new soil. It is best to mix in a small amount of river sand to facilitate ventilation and drainage. Then plant the treated banyan bonsai in it, at the same depth as the original one, and fill it tightly.

4. If the root system of the plant is damaged, do not water it immediately. Wait half a day before watering it for the first time. Be sure to water it thoroughly. Wait until the topsoil is dry before watering it a second time. Place it in a shaded place and gradually transition to scattered light for maintenance.

Things to note when changing the soil for banyan bonsai

When changing the soil and repotting a banyan bonsai, it is generally better to use loose, water-permeable leaf mold. It is also best to place moss of the same size as the pot on top of the bonsai, which plays a good role in drainage and ventilation.

The banyan bonsai should be watered sufficiently two days before changing the soil. This will make it easier to take out the potted plant. When repotting, the soil at the roots should be retained, and a new pot with good air permeability should be selected. After changing the soil, place it in a cool place for maintenance.
