Can cherries be grown in pots?

Cherries can be planted in pots. If you want to plant them in pots, you can choose dwarf varieties, but they grow relatively slowly. If you want to grow them mainly for viewing and secondarily for eating, then pots are the best choice. On the contrary, if you want to pursue economic benefits, it is better to plant them on a large scale.

For potted cherries, you need to choose a wooden pot with a diameter of about 28 cm. This will allow the roots of the plant to breathe easily. Potted cherries grow relatively slowly and require artificial pollination in the middle. It usually takes 3-7 years to bear fruit.

Cherry pot cultivation method

1. Soil preparation

When choosing the soil for planting cherries, you should choose sandy loam according to the above requirements. In order to increase the permeability and looseness, you can add some small stones and place them at the bottom layer to facilitate drainage.

2. Pruning

Pruning during the growing season is mainly done in summer, and the pruning methods include pulling branches, pinching, removing sprouts, twisting shoots, and thinning branches. For example, branches can be pulled in summer and autumn, and pinching can be done before the new shoots harden.

3. Watering

Cherries have high requirements for water and poor drought tolerance. Cherries grown in potted plants are also not tolerant to waterlogging, so when caring for them, always keep the soil slightly moist and water them appropriately.

4. Fertilization

Before cultivating cherries, sufficient base fertilizer needs to be applied, and appropriate topdressing should be carried out during the young tree stage. Fertilizer can be compound fertilizer or liquid fertilizer for irrigation. It is recommended to fertilize 5-6 times a year during its initial fruiting stage.

5. Breeding precautions

The place where cherries are placed should be in a well-ventilated and sunny place. Water them regularly every day. Fertilize with thin fertilizers. You can also add coal slag and rotten grass to the soil to increase nutrients. Prepare medicines to prevent diseases and insect pests. Take good protection in high and low temperatures.
