Introduction to Highland Barley

Highland barley can also be called naked barley, rice barley, yuan barley, and Huai barley. It is a special type of barley. Its inner and outer lemmas are separated from the caryopsis, and the grains are exposed outside, so it is called naked barley. It is a food crop for Tibetans, and can also be used as fuel and livestock feed. It can also be made into beer and health products. Common varieties include black barley, dark green barley, and white barley.

Highland barley planting conditions

Highland barley is suitable for planting on loose, fertile, organic-rich land. It is commonly found in fertile farmland at the bottom of valleys and near river mouths. It prefers warm and humid environment and is relatively cold-resistant. It can be planted in areas with an average annual temperature of 1.5 degrees, more than 3,200 hours of sunshine per year, and an annual frost-free period of about 60 days. It is mainly produced in Tibet, Qinghai, Sichuan, Yunnan and other places in China.

Barley planting time

Different barley varieties have different sowing times. There are winter sowing and spring sowing. In the semi-agricultural and semi-pastoral areas at an altitude of 2600 to 3000 meters, it is suitable to sow in mid-March. In the grassland pastoral areas at an altitude of 3000 to 3400 meters, it is suitable to sow in early April. It is generally harvested in August and September.

Tibet produces 50 tons of highland barley red yeast rice annually, with an annual output value of more than 80 million yuan. Shigatse in Xinjiang produces 20 tons of highland barley instant noodles annually, with an output value of more than 3.5 million yuan.
