How to prune the roots of Selaginella

How to prune the roots of Selaginella

Does Selaginella need root pruning?

When repotting Selaginella, you can properly trim the diseased roots, dead roots, and old roots, which can promote better growth of the plant's root system.

The Selaginella you just bought online needs to have its roots trimmed. Its root system is small and generally fibrous, so when planting it in a pot, in addition to proper root trimming, you also need to choose a more suitable pot for planting.

If it is hydroponically grown, the roots need to be trimmed before hydroponics. Take the plant out of the original pot and move slowly. Then clean the root part, remove the soil on it, trim the old and rotten roots, and promote the growth of the plant.

Root pruning and potting of Selaginella

1. Dragging the pot: After preparing the flower pot and soil, you can remove the plant from the flower pot. You need to use a shovel to circle around the flower pot first. This will loosen the soil and make it easier to remove the flower pot. Tilt the flower pot to the side and slowly take out the plant.

2. Root pruning: After removing the plant from the pot, cut off rotten roots, overgrown roots, and old, weak, and sick roots. After pruning the roots, wounds will be left, which need to be soaked in potassium permanganate solution or polychlorinated fungus solution for disinfection and sterilization, and placed in a relatively ventilated environment.

3. Transplanting into pots: After planting, it needs to be placed in a cool and ventilated place. After it adapts to the new environment, it can be placed in a sunny place for maintenance to prevent root rot.

Selaginella root washing treatment

First prepare a larger container, fill it with clean water, and rinse the plant in the water without damaging its tender roots. If you just want to wash the roots, there is no need to disinfect, and you can put it directly in the pot. If there are rotten roots, it is best to disinfect after pruning the rotten roots to avoid secondary root rot due to failure to disinfect.

Selaginella chinensis root drying pot

After pruning and washing the roots, they need to be dried in a ventilated place for 1-2 days in spring and summer and then they can basically be potted.

Maintenance after root pruning of Selaginella

1. Generally, right after potting, you should water it thoroughly once, and then place the pot in a cool and ventilated place for maintenance. Do not water it frequently during the seedling acclimatization period. However, if the environment is too dry, in order to ensure that the plant can adapt to the pot and survive smoothly, the humidity must also be guaranteed.

2. After pruning the roots and potting, do not expose the plant to the sun immediately. Wait until it adapts to the new environment before you can maintain and manage it normally, which takes about 7 days.
