When is the best time to prune Kalanchoe?

Kalanchoe pruning time

The Kalanchoe can be pruned significantly after the flowers have withered. If it is not blooming, you can choose to prune it in the summer. Regardless of whether it has bloomed or not, it must be pruned before September. It is not suitable to prune it after the end of September because it has begun to form buds, store nutrients, and prepare to bloom.

Kalanchoe should not be pruned in winter or spring, otherwise it will affect its flowering. If the pruning time is right, it will bloom again, and the pruned branches can also be used for reproduction.

How to prune Kalanchoe

1. After the Kalanchoe blooms, you can cut off the second pair of leaves under the flower branch together with the flower branch. After a while, new buds will grow and it will bloom again.

2. After the flowering period of Kalanchoe ends, a major pruning is required. Before July, only about 3 cm of branches need to be left, and the rest should be cut off without leaving any leaves.

3. When pruning the Kalanchoe, you can combine it with repotting. The pruned branches can be inserted into loose soil. Soon the Kalanchoe will sprout more buds. Control the height of the plant within 10-15 cm, and pinch off any height that exceeds.

Precautions for pruning Kalanchoe

It is not recommended to prune Kalanchoe if its leaves are abnormally yellow, twisted, wrinkled, or lack water before pruning, because their growth is not good and new buds cannot sprout in time after pruning.

You also need to observe the health of the root system of the Kalanchoe. Only with a strong root system and suitable planting materials can you ensure that the flower buds can sprout normally after pruning. Before pruning, the nutrients absorbed by the roots are to nourish the growth of numerous branches and leaves. After pruning, the sufficient nutrients are not consumed, and the roots will work hard to sprout new buds.
