How to prune strawberries

When to prune strawberries

Strawberries can generally be pruned in the summer. It is relatively easy to propagate the pruned branches by directly inserting them into the soil. This is because the strawberry leaves will take root wherever they grow, so propagation is relatively simple.

How to prune strawberries

Pruning runners : When strawberries grow, they will grow many runners. The growth of these runners is not very useful to the plants. These runners will also compete with the plants for nutrients, so we have to cut them off.

Thinning flowers and fruits : When the strawberries are in the bud stage, some flowers bloom late, and some flowers cannot bear fruit. At this time, in order to allow the plants to absorb enough nutrients, those flowers that do not bear fruit or bear small fruits must be removed so that the plants can absorb more nutrients.

Prune diseased leaves : When strawberries grow, they may suffer from some diseases and pests. After the diseases and pests occur, their leaves and branches will be affected to a certain extent. After the plant is infected with the disease, it is necessary to clean up the diseased leaves and branches in time to prevent the spread to other plants.

Strawberry Pruning Tips

Pruning and removing old leaves from strawberries is beneficial to their growth and can slow down the consumption of the plants by old leaves. Usually, the petioles that start to turn yellow can be cut off. When spots appear on the strawberry leaves, or the young leaves begin to turn yellow and become diseased, they should be removed immediately to avoid infection by the diseased leaves.

If insects are found, you can cut off the leaves and the insects together to prevent the eggs on the leaves from continuing to reproduce. If there are many flower buds during the fruiting period, you can cut off some of the smaller and weaker buds so that the fruit can grow better.

Strawberry pruning results in more

To make strawberries produce more fruits, remove the stems and leaves that have already produced fruits in the summer, cut off the old leaves to lighten its load, and remove runners to prevent the formation of clones.

In midsummer, pinch off the flower stalks of strawberry plants to remove smaller flowers and allow the plants to grow more vigorously. Remove portions of strawberry plants to prevent competition between plants. Cut back old crowns in highly nutritious plants to maintain density of strawberry plants.

Strawberry pruning precautions

When pruning strawberries, you need to be careful not to prune too hard to prevent the plants from growing normally. After pruning, you can use an appropriate amount of fertilizer and water it, which will help the plants recover.
