When is the best time to sow delphiniums?

Delphinium sowing time

Delphinium is a plant of the Ranunculaceae, Ranunculales, and Delphinium genus. It is more appropriate to sow delphinium directly. When planting, choose the temperature based on the differences between the north and south and the specific changes in temperature. The most suitable temperature is between 15 and 20 degrees. Spring sowing is between March and May, and autumn sowing is between August and September. The temperatures during these time periods are suitable for seed germination.

Delphinium sowing method

Delphiniums can be sown in August and September, sown in open-field seedbeds, placed in cold beds or cold rooms for overwintering before winter, and transplanted in spring. After sowing, keep the soil moist and cover with grass. Remove the covering after the seedlings emerge.

Specific method:

1. After the fruits of delphinium are ripe, take the seeds out of the fruits, put them in a well-ventilated place, dry them, then store them and wait until the spring of the following year to sow them.

2. Choose sandy or acidic soil for planting. If planting outdoors, choose a higher place so that the stems and roots of the plants will not be soaked in rain for a long time during the rainy season, which will affect the growth of the plants.

3. The seeds can be germinated before sowing. First, soak them in warm water for 2 hours, and then use a wet towel to germinate them. Do not sow too densely, otherwise the seedlings will lack nutrition during the growth period and the seedlings will be of different sizes.

4. After the seedlings emerge, water and weed the delphinium in time and loosen the soil to ensure that the soil has better nutrients. Transplant it after it grows to 10 cm.

Delphinium flowering time

If delphinium is sown in early spring, it will enter the flowering period three months later, from August to September. If it is sown in late August, it will take six months to bloom, from March to May of the second year. The flowering time generally lasts about 20 days. Careful maintenance can appropriately extend the flowering period.
