Where do tomato seeds come from?

Tomato seeds develop from ovules, which contain egg cells. After fertilization with sperm in pollen, they develop into seeds. Tomato seeds are more numerous because it has multiple ovules, which are fertilized with sperm from different pollens, thus developing into multiple seeds.

What do tomato seeds look like?

Tomato seeds are very small and granular. You can see them after taking out the inside of the tomato and drying them in a well-ventilated place.

Tomato Seed Spread

Ordinary tomatoes rely on humans to spread their seeds and are artificially cultivated. Wild tomatoes rely on animals to spread their seeds. When the fruits are ripe, they fall to the ground. After being stepped on by animals, the seeds fall randomly to the ground and will germinate when they encounter a suitable environment.

How to get tomato seeds

Wash the tomatoes, cut them in half, scoop the seeds and gelatin into a pot, and place them indoors for 2-3 days to allow them to ferment naturally. When a white bacterial film appears on the seed liquid and the seeds and the gelatin are easily separated, it means that the fermentation is complete. At this time, add water and stir. The seeds will soon sink. Wash them, dry them, and store them.

How to save tomato seeds

During the growth period of tomatoes, you can choose fruits with good growth, plump size, bright color and thick flesh for reserved seed protection. They can be harvested when they are ripe, then washed and dried.

Tomato Seed Planting

1. Growth process

Plant the tomato seeds in the soil and lightly cover them with a thin layer of soil. Water them to keep the soil slightly moist and place them in a semi-shaded and ventilated place. Soon you will see the seeds taking root and sprouting. After a few leaves grow, you can transplant them into pots.

2. Sowing time

Tomatoes are usually planted in mid-February or early May, when the temperature is stable at above 15 degrees, which is suitable for seed germination and a higher survival rate.

3. Planting method

Before sowing tomatoes, soak the seeds in clean water for 1-2 hours. After taking them out, soak them in 55℃ water for about 15 minutes. This can reduce the germination time in the soil. Then you can plant them in the soil, keep the ambient temperature at around 22℃, and they will germinate in about a week.
