How to prune camellia

When to prune camellia

Camellias are usually pruned after they bloom. If they bloom in the same year, they can be pruned in December. If they bloom in the next spring, they can be pruned in May. Cut off dense branches, crossed branches, etc. to increase internal ventilation and light transmittance. At the same time, remove buds appropriately to promote the growth of new shoots.

Choose a suitable branch, pick off the leaves at the rooting end of the camellia branch, leaving 1 to 2 leaves on the branch, apply carbendazim on the wound, place it in a cool and ventilated place to dry, then insert the branch into a container of water, making sure to keep it moist. It will usually take root within two weeks.

Camellia pruning

1. Summer-autumn differentiation type: Most camellias bloom in spring, and their flower buds begin to differentiate in the summer and autumn of the previous year. Pruning must be done after flowering. If pruning is too late, it will consume a lot of nutrients and affect the quality and quantity of flowering.

2. Current-year differentiation type: Some varieties of camellia bloom in the autumn of the same year, and their flower buds form and bloom on the new shoots of the same year. Its pruning can be done during the dormant period.

3. When pruning, pay attention to ensuring that the cut is flat to reduce damage to the mother plant. When pruning dense branches, you must cut them directly from the base. In addition, after pruning, nitrogen fertilizer should be applied as soon as possible to promote its resumption of growth as soon as possible.

Pruning: Proper pruning of camellia can make it sprout more new branches. If the old branches grow too long, the new branches cannot absorb enough nutrients and cannot grow new branches. Pruning camellia in February and March every year can remove weak and diseased branches and leave more nutrients for new buds.

Camellia pruning and flowering

Pruning promotes flowering: When camellia is not in bloom, it needs to be pruned to remove the overgrown branches and blind buds to save nutrients for the camellia, making it easier to bloom in winter.

Camellia pruning precautions

Camellias have different flowering periods. Some bloom in October and November, and pruning can be done in December. If the camellia blooms in March, pruning should be done in April. Pruning is generally not recommended at other times.
