How to prune holly bonsai

When to prune holly bonsai

Holly bonsai can be pruned three times, generally in March and April, July and August, and September and October. Proper pruning can promote the growth of branches, make it luxuriant and enhance the overall ornamental value.

Pruning holly bonsai

In the spring, the tender shoots and buds on the top of the holly bonsai can be removed. Later, the dense branches, crossed branches, diseased branches and dead branches can be pruned away to reduce the loss of nutrients. In addition, the pot needs to be changed every 1-2 years. When changing the pot, the roots can be trimmed. Be careful not to damage the main root.

Holly Bonsai Pruning and Shaping

1. Pinching: Holly bonsai can be pinched in spring. Pinching means removing the tender shoots and buds on the top to control the height of the plant and make the whole plant look fuller and more symmetrical, which is conducive to later growth and shaping.

2. Pruning: Holly bonsai needs to be pruned once in spring from March to April, mainly to cut off dense branches, crossed branches, diseased branches and dead branches, so that the holly looks sparse and orderly, staggered and well-arranged, and also to prepare for the flowering period of the broken-leaf holly.

3. Root pruning: During the planting process of holly bonsai, the pot should be changed every one to two years. When changing the pot, the roots need to be trimmed. Just cut off some excess fibrous roots, old roots, and rotten roots. Be sure not to damage the main root.

4. Shaping: In order to make the holly more ornamental, you can shape it according to its characteristics. It can be made into the popular single-stem style, and then it can be made into the desired shape after winding.

Precautions for pruning holly bonsai

1. Prune in moderation: Although holly grows fast and is very resistant to pruning, we should not over-prune it during the planting process. Generally, pruning 3-5 times a year is sufficient, and repeated pruning is not allowed. In addition, do not damage the root system when pruning the roots.

2. Basic requirements: When pruning holly, the main branches should be retained and weak branches should be pruned, so that the main branches will sprout more side branches. When pruning side branches, attention should be paid to "strong pruning of strong side branches and weak pruning of weak side branches."
