How to propagate Daphne odora and what to pay attention to

How to propagate Daphne koreana

There are four main methods for propagating Osmanthus fragrans: sowing, cuttings, grafting and high-branch layering, among which cuttings are the simplest.

Seed propagation of Daphne koreana

Daphne koreana can be propagated by sowing. When the seeds are mature, they are harvested, cleaned and dried, and then sown in the soil. They will germinate in the spring of the following year.

How to propagate Daphne odora fastest

The fastest way to propagate Osmanthus fragrans is by cuttings. When taking cuttings, cut a crack at the bottom of the cuttings and sandwich a stone the size of a rice grain. This can greatly increase the contact area between the cuttings and the cutting medium and speed up the rooting time of the cuttings.

The breeding time of Daphne koreana

Osmanthus fragrans is usually propagated by cuttings in spring from late February to late March. The suitable temperature for growth is 20 to 25℃. The early spring has a suitable temperature and humidity for the cuttings to take root. In addition, cuttings can also be carried out in summer and autumn. In areas with distinct four seasons, cuttings should be carried out from June to July in summer, and from late August to late September in autumn.

How to propagate Daphne odora

Cutting propagation of Daphne koreana

Choose strong semi-lignified new branches, about 5-10 cm in length, and cut them obliquely. Cut off the leaves at the bottom. Soak the roots in sterilizer and then air-dry them in a cool and ventilated place. Choose loose, well-permeable, slightly acidic soil. You can use a mixture of leaf mold and coarse river sand.

Then plant the Osmanthus fragrans cuttings into the prepared soil. Water it thoroughly immediately after planting, and then move it to a semi-shaded environment for maintenance. You can also cover the flowerpot with a plastic bag to keep it warm and moist. Fertilize it only after the cuttings survive.

Sowing propagation of Daphne koreana

The substrate for sowing and cultivating seedlings of Osmanthus fragrans must also meet the requirements of looseness, breathability and good drainage. Alkaline soil cannot be used. Sowing should be carried out in spring. After sowing, cover the flowerpot with a layer of plastic film to retain moisture and keep warm. The temperature should be maintained at 20℃, and then placed in a well-lit place waiting for germination.

Propagation of Osmanthus fragrans by leaf cuttings

First, select strong, disease-free branches, make a 1-2 cm ring bark, then wrap the cut with a plastic bag, place it in the soil, and insert some small holes in the plastic bag to facilitate ventilation and watering. It will take 30-60 days for the branches to take root. After rooting, separate the branches from the mother plant.

Hydroponic propagation of Daphne koreana

The survival rate of Osmanthus fragrans in hydroponics in summer is relatively high. First, choose a transparent container of suitable size, then select semi-lignified and sturdy branches grown in the current year, with a length of 6-8 cm. Soak the cut branches in disinfectant for 10 minutes, then put them in water, and change the water every 2-3 days.

Precautions for breeding of Daphne koreana

Osmanthus fragrans does not like soil with poor drainage. The cutting medium should be mainly fine sand. The fine sand particles are small and in close contact with the cuttings. Sand can also prevent the invasion and spread of mold. Leaf mold is most beneficial to its growth. It must be disinfected before use.
