How do Magnolia trees survive the winter?

How do Magnolia trees survive the winter?

Growth habit

Magnolia trees grow best in warm and humid climates. They prefer plenty of sunlight and can develop normally in a semi-shaded environment.

Magnolia trees also have a certain degree of cold resistance and can survive temporary low temperatures of minus 20 °C. Generally, they can safely overwinter in open fields in Beijing and areas to its south.

However, in order to achieve this goal in Beijing and areas north of it, corresponding protective measures need to be taken.

Measures taken

Around the end of October, you should start preparing for the winter cold protection of your magnolia tree. The specific content of the protective measures that need to be taken can be summarized in one sentence: "Put on four pieces of clothing for the magnolia tree":

Wrap the main branches of the magnolia tree with straw ropes.

Then use felt cloth to wrap the entire body tightly from the root of the tree to the crown.

After the felt cloth is wrapped, it is necessary to use straw rope to tie it on the outside.

Finally, fill the roots of the magnolia tree with enough antifreeze water, cover it with plastic film, and finally do the soil work.

In addition, other measures such as whitewashing, fertilizing and pruning can be taken according to the actual condition of the tree trunks. Combined with this "four-piece set" of protection, the seedlings can be provided with sufficient water and nutrients in winter, while at the same time enhancing the seedlings' cold resistance and preventing the flower and leaf buds on the trees from being damaged by wind and frost.

After the magnolia tree successfully survives the cold winter, the seedlings will grow and bloom normally in the spring of the following year.
