How to grow potted camellia and what to pay attention to

Camellia growth habits

Potted camellia prefers a warm winter, cool, humid and semi-shady summer. It avoids exposure to the sun, is not cold-resistant, and cannot tolerate waterlogging. It is suitable for growing in fertile, loose, slightly acidic loam, yellow soil or humus soil, with a pH of 5.5-6.5 being the best.

Camellia prefers partial shade and half sun. Young trees can tolerate shade, while large trees need a certain amount of light. More than 3 to 4 hours of sunlight a day is conducive to flowering. However, it should be noted that strong direct sunlight in summer will burn the leaves of the plant, so scattered light is preferred rather than direct light. The most suitable growth temperature for potted camellia is 18-25℃.

Potted Camellia cultivation method

Potted camellia can usually be placed in a semi-shaded environment for maintenance. The growth temperature can be controlled at 16-24℃, and the soil should be kept moist. However, water should not accumulate when watering. Thin fertilizers should be applied frequently during the growth period. In the process of growing camellia, branches and leaves need to be pruned regularly to concentrate the nutrients of the plant and facilitate growth.

Watering potted camellia

Watering of potted camellia should be determined according to the season. Spring is the peak growth season and the water demand is high. It should be watered every two or three days. In summer, the temperature is high and water is lost quickly. It is necessary to replenish water frequently. It is recommended to water it once in the morning and evening. In autumn, the temperature drops slowly and the water demand decreases, so water it once a week. In winter, if the soil is not too dry, there is no need to water it, but once every half a month.

Fertilizing Potted Camellia

It is better to use organic fertilizer when fertilizing potted camellia. Homemade bean cake water fertilizer, fish bone meal and livestock manure fertilizer are all good choices. They can be fully mixed with the soil, which will have a very good effect. Organic fertilizer is more suitable for use before planting, while liquid fertilizer can be used for topdressing.

Pruning potted camellia

If you want potted camellia to look good, you should prune it after it blooms. For fast-growing varieties, you can cut the branches by half or 1/3. For slow-growing varieties, you only need to prune the branches that are too long to ensure the perfect plant shape. In addition, when diseased branches and overly dense branches are found, cut them off in time to increase ventilation and light transmittance, and also save nutrient consumption.

Potted Camellia Cuttings

First, prepare the seedlings for cuttings. You can pick the stems and leaves from the camellia. The stems and leaves you choose for cuttings must be plump and strong, so that the shape of the camellia processed by cuttings will be better.

After preparing the stems and leaves, you need to prepare the pot for cuttings. Fill the pot with soil, and then insert the leaf stems into it. Don't insert it too deep. After cutting, water it and then cover it with soil.

Matters Needing Attention in the Maintenance of Potted Camellia

1. When caring for potted camellia, you need to pay attention to the following: when flower buds appear, if many flowers bloom, you should appropriately cut off some of the buds so that the remaining buds can grow beautifully.

2. In addition, potted camellias are prone to diseases and pests when the weather is warm, so you need to spray some medicine in advance to prevent them.
