How to grow hydrangea

Hydrangea Growing Conditions

Hydrangea prefers warm, humid and semi-shady environment. It is suitable for growing in fertile, well-drained acidic soil. The pH value of the soil has a certain influence on its flower color. When the soil is acidic, the flowers are blue. If the soil is alkaline, the flowers are red.

How to grow hydrangea

It is better to use acidic soil when growing hydrangeas. Apply decomposed thin cake fertilizer water once every 15 days during the growth period. Ferrous sulfate can be added to it to maintain the acidity of the soil. The application of cake fertilizer should be avoided during the hot summer period to prevent the plants from being affected by diseases and pests and damaging the root system.

Watering hydrangeas

In spring and summer, hydrangeas need to be watered 1 to 2 times a day to ensure that the soil of the plants is moist and avoid water shortage. In autumn and winter, watering should be gradually reduced to once every 10 to 15 days, but root rot should be avoided, otherwise it will affect growth.

Hydrangea Fertilization

Hydrangea likes fertilizer and needs to be applied every 15 days during the growing season. Ferrous sulfate can be added to the fertilizer to keep the soil slightly acidic. Superphosphate can also be applied 1 to 2 times before flowering to promote more and brighter flowers.

Hydrangea pest control

The diseases of hydrangea are generally powdery mildew and leaf spot. After being attacked, it should be sprayed with wettable powder of mancozeb. The most common insect pest is aphid, which can be controlled by spraying with omethoate emulsion.

How to grow hydrangea at home

1. When growing hydrangeas at home, choose slightly acidic soil with good drainage and rich nutrients for cultivation. It needs to grow in an environment with sufficient light, and the tips of the plants need to be pinched during the growing period.

2. Hydrangea should be watered 1 to 2 times a day in spring and summer, once every 10 to 15 days in autumn and winter, fertilized every 15 days during the growing season, and superphosphate applied 1 to 2 times during the bud formation period to promote flowering.

Hydrangea maintenance precautions

1. During the growth period of the Eight Immortals Flower, when the new branches grow to 10-15cm, in order to promote the growth of the side branches of the plant, it is necessary to pinch the top of the branch and cut it off. When the side branches grow to 8-10cm, cut off the top of the side branches. This is conducive to the growth of the plant in a straight and uniform shape suitable for viewing.

2. After entering winter, hydrangea should be kept indoors and the temperature should be controlled above 5℃ so that it can survive the winter safely. Reduce the amount of watering in winter to avoid root rot.
