How many days does it take for celery to germinate?

How many days does it take for celery to germinate?

Celery is a common vegetable variety in rural areas. From the time the first flower blooms to the time the whole plant is ready for seed collection and harvesting, the cycle is long and usually takes 60-80 days to complete because of its many branches and the different orders of flowering and fruiting. Let’s learn how many days it takes for celery to germinate.

How many days does it take for celery to germinate?

It usually takes 7-10 days for celery seeds to germinate. This time may be affected by factors such as temperature, humidity, and soil conditions. The minimum temperature for celery seeds to germinate is 4°C, and the most suitable temperature is 15 to 20°C. If the temperature is below 15°C, the germination time of seeds will be prolonged, while the germination rate will be significantly reduced above 25°C, and almost no germination will occur above 30°C. Under suitable temperature conditions, the seeds will germinate in 7 to 10 days. At the same time, there must be sufficient water and oxygen for the seeds to germinate.

If the seeds are not treated with germination, the germination time may be relatively prolonged, generally requiring a wait of about 20-30 days. When planting celery, choose seeds that are high-yielding, disease-resistant and insect-resistant, and carry out appropriate germination treatments to shorten the germination time and increase the germination rate.

The germination method includes soaking the seeds in clean water for 24 hours, then rubbing and washing several times until the water is clear, spreading the seeds on a straw mat in a cool place to dry slightly, and after excess moisture on the surface of the seeds has dissipated, placing them in a clay pot, covering them with a wet cloth, and placing them in a cool and ventilated place for germination. The suitable temperature for germination is 15-20℃.

When is the best time to plant celery?

Celery is a cool-weather vegetable, and its planting time varies by region and season. The following are the planting times for celery according to different seasons:

Spring celery: In northern regions, seedlings are usually grown in protected areas from January to March, planted in the open field from March to April, and harvested from May to July. March is the suitable sowing period in the Yangtze River Basin.

Summer celery: Seedlings are grown in the open field after the frost stops in spring, usually planted from June to early July, and harvested and put on the market from August to September. Summer celery grows poorly in hot and rainy seasons, with many seedlings dying, low yields, and a small planting area.

Autumn celery: In northern regions, sowing and seedling raising are carried out from June to early July, transplanting is carried out from August to early September, and harvesting is carried out from October to November. In the Yangtze River Basin, crops are sown from early July to early September and harvested from October to December. For late sowing, harvesting is completed before the crop bolts in March or April of the following year.

Winter celery: It can be cultivated in the open field in the Yangtze River Basin and the south, sown from September to November, and harvested from December to April of the following year. It can be cultivated in protected areas in the north.

To sum up, the celery germination time is usually about seven to ten days. Of course, if managed properly, the germination time may be a little earlier.
