How to deal with late spring cold in cherry trees

How to deal with late spring cold in cherry trees

Big cherries, also known as cherries, mainly grow in the south. Their cold resistance is not as strong as that of northern fruit trees such as apples. In recent years, new varieties of cherries that are more cold-resistant have appeared, but in this process, you still need to pay attention to insulation to increase the fruit set rate. Here's how cherry trees deal with late spring cold.

1. Understand the laws of weather changes

Keep abreast of the occurrence patterns of late spring cold snaps, check the recent weather forecast more often, and prepare preventive measures for the orchard at any time to avoid being caught off guard when late spring cold snaps come.

2. Timely Bacon

During the spring weeding process, shallow tillage should be carried out between the rows and plants of cherry trees, and the roots should be covered with soil. The surrounding soil temperature should be increased through measures such as soil covering. If it is a greenhouse cherry, if conditions permit, you can add a small arch shed inside the shed to increase the temperature inside the shed. You can also cover the roof with thermal blankets, straw mats, etc. to increase the temperature inside the shed to prevent cold.

3. Proper watering

Before and after flowering, according to the weather forecast, irrigate the entire orchard one day before frost or spray water 1-2 hours before frost to increase the temperature of the orchard by condensing water to dissipate heat. Watering the cherry orchard one week before flowering can delay flowering by 3 to 5 days and avoid the low temperature period.

4. Spray antifreeze

The temperature will drop less during the big bud period, and it is expected that when the temperature is above -2°C, spraying antifreeze can play a certain role in preventing cold.

5. Fertilizer and water management

It is necessary to increase the application of organic fertilizer , apply sufficient base fertilizer, protect the leaves, and at the same time, water the trees before freezing to improve their frost resistance. Increase the tree's nutrient reserves, strengthen drainage and flood prevention work, and prevent the tree from weakening.

6. Whitewashing of tree trunks

Applying whitewash on tree trunks has obvious heat-insulating and anti-freeze effects. It is made of 10 kg of quicklime + 2 kg of salt + 1 kg of sulfur powder + 0.1 kg of animal and vegetable oil + 20 kg of water. Before preparation, use 1/2 water to dissolve quicklime and salt respectively, remove the ash, add sulfur powder and animal and vegetable oil, mix well and use.

7. Smoke

Fumigation can not only raise the temperature in the orchard by 2-4 degrees, but also prevent the dissipation of heat from the ground through the smoke screen produced, slowing down the rate of temperature drop in the orchard and avoiding or reducing damage. The most commonly used fumigation method is to light smoke piles in the garden. It is better to have more smoke piles. When there is wind, they should be placed on the windward side. When there is no wind, they should be evenly arranged around and in the middle. In order to save materials and labor, the best time to ignite is when the temperature is close to zero degrees and continue until the sun comes out. In addition, there is also the method of lighting grass bunches in the garden, but the effect is not as good as lighting a cigarette pile.

That’s it
