Peach tree is a deciduous small tree or shrub belonging to the genus Prunus in the Rosaceae family. It is one of the important tree species of temperate fruits. It usually takes 2-3 years for peach trees to bear fruit from planting. Different varieties have different maturity periods, usually from summer to autumn. Let’s learn some peach seedling planting techniques together. 1. How to plant peach trees 1. Rectangular planting: The row spacing is larger than the plant spacing, which is conducive to ventilation and light transmission, and is convenient for field operations and intercropping. It is the most common method in current production. 2. Square planting: equal spacing between rows and plants and uniform light exposure are conducive to balanced development of the tree crown and facilitate cultivation and management of the peach orchard. However, crowding may occur in case of dense planting, while early yield will not be high in case of sparse planting. 3. Triangular planting: Two adjacent rows of plants are arranged in a triangle, which makes more economical use of land, but is inconvenient to operate, causes insufficient light, and causes the tree crown to become densely packed. 4. Contour planting: Suitable for mountains, terraces and trenches. Peach trees are planted along the contour lines to help conserve water and soil. The choice of planting method should be determined based on factors such as region, variety characteristics and light requirements, and is one of the key factors in achieving a high yield of peach trees. 2. Peach tree planting density Planting density depends on soil conditions, shaping method and variety. Peach trees like light and are suitable for moderately sparse planting. However, with the application of new crown control technology, in order to achieve early fruiting and high yield, the planting density has increased. The common density is 3×4 meters or 2×4 meters. It is recommended to adjust it to 2×5 meters or 2×6 meters 4 to 5 years after planting to increase early yield and quality and facilitate field operations. When selecting varieties, the local climate, temperature and humidity, rainfall and market demand should be considered, and high-quality varieties with strong resistance and high yield should be selected. 3. Site selection and land preparation for peach trees Site selection and land preparation are important tasks before peach tree cultivation. You should choose a plot that is high and flat with loose and breathable soil rich in organic matter. Make sure there are no tall trees blocking the light and the soil pH is between 6 and 6.5. If the soil pH is not suitable, it should be improved. At the same time, good drainage and traffic conditions, as well as sufficient light, must be ensured. When preparing the land, deep plow the soil and apply sufficient base fertilizer, mainly organic fertilizer and supplemented by chemical fertilizer, to lay a good foundation for high-density cultivation of peach trees. 4. Planting period of peach trees The planting of peach trees is mainly carried out in spring and autumn. In spring, transplanting is after the soil thaws and before budding, and in autumn, transplanting is after the leaves fall and before the soil freezes. Whether planting in spring or autumn, the planting density should be strictly controlled. 5. Planting method of peach trees Before planting, dig a planting hole of 80cm³ in size. The hole can be increased appropriately in sandy soil. When planting, first fill the topsoil into the pit, then add 25 to 35 kg of organic fertilizer and mix it evenly with the soil. When planting seedlings, the roots should be stretched out and the grafting point should face the wind. The planting depth should be such that the root neck is level with the ground, and the grafting point of the seedling should be higher than the ground. Water the roots immediately after planting, and cover with soil after the water seeps down to the same level as the ground. 6. Requirements for the previous crop in peach planting areas Peach trees are sensitive to repeated cropping, and are prone to problems such as weak growth, gum flow, and low yield after repeated cropping. Therefore, newly planted peach orchards should avoid having stone fruit trees as the previous crop to prevent soil nutrient deficiency, accumulation of pests and diseases, and root residues from toxicating the peach trees. In summary, the timing for planting peach trees is usually divided into two periods: spring and autumn. Now is a good time to plant peach trees in autumn. This article shares the appropriate way, density, period and planting methods for peach tree planting, hoping to help growers avoid detours when planting new varieties.
