Throw away Phalaenopsis orchids after they bloom? So stupid! If I grow it like this, it will bloom every winter!

Choose a hole flower pot

Regarding the choice of Phalaenopsis flower pots, the first type introduced to you is the plastic pot, and the one recommended here is the cover pot! The basin inside should be a transparent plastic basin with holes around the sides and bottom.

For the outer pot, choose a plastic pot without holes at the bottom, but be careful to drill holes in the side wall of the pot, and the height of the holes should be flush with the bottom of the inner pot.

The second type is the red clay pot that we novices are most familiar with when growing orchids. It is very suitable for pairing with sphagnum moss.

We need to be careful when choosing to use terracotta pots. We also need to choose pots with many holes on the bottom and walls of the pots. Newly bought flower pots should be dehumidified and soaked in water for one night before use.

How to plant Phalaenopsis?

For planting materials, we can choose tree bark, sphagnum moss, snakewood, coconut coir, expanded clay, fine bricks and stones, etc. For flower lovers in the north, the air is relatively dry, so Huahua recommends using sphagnum moss to care for Phalaenopsis!

Before using sphagnum moss, soak it in hot water, then wring it dry and set aside. Before potting, fill the root pocket of the Phalaenopsis with sphagnum moss, put a drain cover in the middle, and then wrap the roots with sphagnum moss.

Gently press the Phalaenopsis into the flowerpot, and then use a small wire to fill it with sphagnum moss. Don't stuff it too tight, 80% tightness is enough. After stuffing it in, cover the top with a layer of sphagnum moss.

Daily maintenance

When caring for Phalaenopsis, it is better to use scattered light. We can feel the intensity of the sunlight with our hands. It is gentle but not irritating when shining on the back of our hands. Touch the leaves and it is fine as long as they are not hot.

Now that we have entered autumn, we need to slowly increase the light and gradually adapt to full daylight in winter. However, due to different environments in different places, the lighting should be handled as appropriate.

2. Temperature and humidity

The temperature of Phalaenopsis during the growth period is best controlled between 20 and 30℃. It will stop growing if it is higher than 35℃ or lower than 18℃.

The humidity should be kept at 75%~80%. If it is during the seedling acclimatization period, higher air humidity may be required. We can increase the humidity by spraying water and using a humidifier.

3. Moisture

When watering, you should often weigh the plant and feel it become lighter. Touch the sphagnum moss at the air holes at the bottom of the pot with your hand, or directly insert your hand into the sphagnum moss, and then water it when it feels dry.

If you use bark for maintenance, its water retention is poor, so you need to water it more frequently than sphagnum moss.

4. Ventilation

No matter what kind of plant it is, if you want to take good care of it at home, you must pay attention to adequate ventilation. Poor ventilation not only makes potted plants grow poorly, but also causes plant rot and various diseases and pests.

5. Fertilization

We can start applying comprehensive nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers 2 weeks after the flowers have faded; phosphorus and potassium fertilizers can be applied when promoting flowering, and the light should be increased until the flower buds grow to the size of peanut kernels, then we can stop fertilizing!

What to do after the flowers fade?

For the Phalaenopsis orchids we bought, after enjoying its beauty and the flowers wither, we should cut off the flower stalks in time to reduce the consumption of the plant and store nutrients for the next flowering.

<<:  If you don't cut off all the leaves of these flowers, the flowers will basically die.

>>:  Don’t use soil for cuttings now, just a piece of sponge will produce white roots, and the plants will 100% adapt to the pot!
