When is the best time to sow onions?

Onions are grown in all parts of my country and have high market demand. Farmers who want to grow onions can master the sowing time. The sowing time of onions varies depending on the region, climate and variety, so when is the best time to sow onions? Let’s take a look with the editor below.

1. When is the best time to sow onions?

1. Spring sowing

Spring is the right time to plant onions. Onions can germinate normally at a temperature of 13℃-20℃, and the suitable temperature for plant growth is 10℃-25℃. Spring sowing can be carried out in March and April, and harvesting can be done in June and July. Onion seedlings sown in spring can quickly take root and grow tender green leaves, laying a solid foundation for subsequent lush growth.

2. Autumn sowing

Autumn is also suitable for planting onions, and the planting time is generally from September to October. The large temperature difference in autumn is conducive to the absorption of nutrients by the roots of onions. In the southern region, due to the relatively warm climate, there are not many restrictions on planting time, and planting can be carried out almost all year round. Onions planted in autumn can also effectively avoid the peak period of diseases and pests in spring, thereby improving yield and quality.

2. Onion sowing method

1. Broadcasting method

Choose fertile, loose, well-drained soil for sowing. Before sowing, the soil can be deeply plowed and an appropriate amount of base fertilizer can be applied to provide sufficient nutrients. If the soil does not contain enough water, you need to water it first to keep the soil moist. But also be careful to avoid stagnant water, so as not to cause the seeds to rot.

Sprinkle the onion seeds evenly on the soil surface, and then gently compact it so that the seeds are in close contact with the soil. Then cover with a layer of fine soil about 1.5 cm thick to retain soil moisture and promote seed germination. After covering the soil, you can use tools to gently press the soil to make it more compact, which is conducive to the growth of seeds.

After sowing, keep the soil moist and avoid drought. At the same time, pay attention to weeding and thinning to prevent weeds from competing with onion seedlings for nutrients and water. During the growth period of onion seedlings, fertilizers should be applied in time to meet their growth needs.

2. Drilling method

Choose fertile, loose, well-drained soil for sowing. Deeply till the soil and apply fertilizer before sowing. Dig trenches on the soil surface at a certain row spacing. The depth of the trench can be determined according to the size of the onion seeds and the soil texture, generally 4.5-20 cm. Sprinkle the onion seeds evenly in the trench, then lightly cover them with a layer of fine soil so that the seeds are in close contact with the soil, and be careful to keep the soil in the trench moist.

After covering the soil, you can also use tools to gently press the soil. If the soil moisture is insufficient, water it immediately after sowing and water it again before emergence so that the seedlings can emerge smoothly. The management of the row sowing method is similar to that of the broadcast sowing method, and it is also necessary to keep the soil moist, weed, thin out the seedlings and apply fertilizers in time.

The above is an introduction to the best time to sow onions. Before sowing, the onion seeds can be properly treated, such as soaking and germination, to increase the germination rate and emergence rate of the seeds.
