How to grow lotus

How to grow lotus

There are many types of plants. Some friends like to grow some cultivated plants in their own yards. Bowl lotus is one of the choices of many people. The bowl lotus, with its elegant posture and beautiful flowers, has become a favorite of gardening enthusiasts. Let’s learn how to grow water lilies.

1. Suitable planting time

The planting of water lilies should start when the temperature is stably above 20 degrees Celsius to ensure that the seeds can germinate, grow and bloom easily. Usually, the water lily begins to sprout about a week after sowing, and about half a month later, when the plant grows three leaves and forms a root system, it can be transplanted. Under good maintenance conditions, the bowl lotus will bloom after more than two months.

2. Planting method

Planting lotus roots: April, when the temperature reaches above 15 degrees Celsius, is the best time to plant lotus roots. The bowl lotus grown using lotus roots grows quickly, with tender leaves growing in about 10 days and flower buds in about a month. Since the lotus roots are mature, the flowering time is relatively early. In order to avoid buying fake seeds, many gardening enthusiasts choose to buy seed lotus roots with buds. Although the price is higher, it can guarantee the survival rate and ornamental effect.

Seed sowing: Choose a reputable merchant to buy water lily seeds and avoid the temptation of low prices. Before sowing, the hard seed shell needs to be opened to promote seed water absorption and germination. After sowing, place the seeds under sufficient light. They will begin to germinate in about 7 days and new shoots will grow after half a month.

3. Soil and container selection

Choose soil suitable for the growth of water lilies, such as pond soil, or use garden soil instead. The container should be a larger non-transparent container, about 20 cm in size, to ensure that the roots have enough space to grow.

4. Moisture management

After planting the bowl lotus, make sure there is always enough water in the container so that the leaves can float on the water surface and avoid the leaves from drying out.

5. Fertilization techniques

During the planting process, organic fertilizers can be applied appropriately, especially during the leaf and bud growth period, and fermented phosphorus and potassium fertilizers can be applied in appropriate amounts to promote lush leaves and full flowers.

6. Maintenance points

Newly purchased seed lotus roots should be soaked in water for 24 hours. Choose a suitable container, either a professional lotus bowl or a household soup bowl. When adding pond mud, add base fertilizer in the middle and plant the lotus close to the edge of the bowl. When planting, make sure the head of the lotus root is covered with soil and the tail is exposed. Add water after planting, with enough water to rinse out impurities in the container.

In short, place the water lily in an environment with sufficient light, and you will be able to enjoy the flowers of the water lily after about a month. Different varieties of bowl lotus have different flowering habits. Some varieties bloom before growing upright leaves, while others need to grow a certain number of floating leaves and upright leaves before forming flower buds. This depends on the characteristics of the variety as well as the light, temperature and maintenance conditions.
