How to grow gardenias

How to grow gardenias

1. Soil

Gardenia is an acidic plant, so acidic soil is more suitable for its growth. Alkaline hard soil cannot grow gardenia well. In addition to being acidic, the soil also needs to have good drainage and appropriate looseness. Only this kind of soil can grow it well.

2. Light and temperature

Gardenia likes the sun and must be exposed to more than eight hours of diffuse light every day to meet its needs, but it needs to be shaded at noon to avoid sunburn. The temperature suitable for its growth is above 15 degrees and below 25 degrees. If the temperature is too low, it will not bloom. If the temperature is too high, it will easily lack water. Both of these situations will affect its health and it will be difficult to grow gardenia well.

3. Watering

Gardenia likes moisture. During its flowering period in summer, it needs to be watered two to three times a week. Its branches, leaves and flower buds also need to be watered every morning and evening to keep them moist. In winter, its water consumption is not so great, so watering it two to three times a month is enough.

4. Fertilization

During the flowering and growing period of gardenia, it consumes a lot of nutrients. If the nutrients cannot keep up, the branches and leaves will turn yellow, and only flower buds will form but no flowers will bloom. Therefore, during these two special periods, it is necessary to ensure sufficient nutrients and apply fertilizer two to three times a month. During this period, you must also pay close attention to its condition and apply top dressing if any abnormalities are found. In autumn and winter, fertilizing once a month is enough.
