How to prune gardenia after it blooms

How to prune gardenia after it blooms

1. Pruning method

After the gardenia flowers fade, there will be many withered branches and dead flowers. When pruning, the main thing is to remove this kind of excess branches and leaves, and secondly to remove the two or three pairs of leaves on the top of the healthy branches. This is done to stimulate the growth of the gardenia, making it grow more beautiful, and bloom more and better quality next time. Finally, you need to cut off the top buds that are too dense, and only leave three or four buds on one branch. This is done to concentrate the nutrients, which is conducive to the next flowering of the gardenia.

2. Nourish after cutting

After pruning, it is necessary to supplement the gardenia with appropriate nutrients, preferably multi-element fertilizer. You can also make some organic fertilizer yourself and fertilize according to the condition of the gardenia. Generally, fertilize three times a month after pruning. Although gardenia likes fertilizer, it needs time to ease because it has just been pruned, so three times a month is most reasonable, and not too much.

3. Notes

After pruning, spray the gardenia with 1000 times of thiophanate-methyl solution, because the gardenia is weak after pruning and easily infected by bacteria. The purpose of spraying this medicine is to enhance the resistance of gardenia and eliminate bacteria. Gardenias cannot be exposed to the sun immediately after being pruned. It is best to place them in a cool place and wait until the cut scars heal before they can be exposed to sunlight normally. When watering, avoid watering the cut surface and avoid water accumulation in the pot.
