Can Peony be Grafted?

There are many ways to propagate peonies. In addition to the more common propagation methods such as seed propagation and cutting propagation, we can actually use grafting to propagate peonies.

Using the scarf grafting method to graft peonies

When using peony roots as rootstocks, because the roots of peony are relatively soft and do not have a hard core, they are easier to graft. The roots are thick and short, and the nutrients are sufficient. The survival rate of grafting will be relatively high, and the growth will be more vigorous after successful grafting. Grafting with peony roots will be more difficult, but the plant will have a longer lifespan after successful grafting.

Grafting Peonies Using the Belly Grafting Method

This grafting method is to graft many branches of inferior peonies into excellent varieties of different colors. After the peony is grafted, you must pay attention to irrigation, but there is no need to water it separately during the rainy season. Instead, you must do a good job of drainage and maintain a temperature suitable for the growth of peonies, which can increase the survival rate of the grafted peonies.

Grafting peonies using bud grafting

This method is generally carried out from May to July each year, and it is best to choose a sunny day for grafting. You can use the skin-sticking method and the bud-changing method. The bud sticking method is to cut a small square hole on the rootstock, then trim the prepared bud to be grafted into the same shape and install it in the cut square hole, and tie it tightly with a rope. The bud replacement method is to completely remove the axillary buds on the rootstock, retain the bud embryo, and then use the same method to cut off the axillary buds of the branch to be grafted, quickly put it on the notch of the rootstock, and tie it tightly with a rope. After the grafting is completed, attention should be paid to watering, loosening the soil, fertilizing, etc. to promote the healing of the grafting site.
