How to propagate lavender

How to propagate lavender

1. Cutting propagation

1. Cutting time

If propagated by cuttings, it has strong adaptability and can usually be grown in spring and autumn. Even in summer, it is possible to use young branches for cuttings, but higher cutting conditions need to be met and the air humidity should not be too high or too low. Usually the best time to take cuttings is in autumn, and keep the temperature between 15 and 25 degrees.

2. Processing cuttings

Before propagation by cuttings, you need to choose high-quality cuttings. First, choose well-developed and sturdy branches, then select branches with short internodes and no heading and cut them off. The cuttings should be located 0.5 to 1 cm below the stem node, and ensure that the cut is smooth. If there are leaves on the cuttings, two-thirds should be removed without damaging the bast.

3. Cutting method

When taking cuttings, choose a medium containing perlite and peat. If conditions permit at home, you can set up a seedbed in the greenhouse for cuttings. When taking cuttings, do not insert the cuttings too deep, 5 to 8 cm is best, and keep the spacing between plants and rows appropriate.

4. Management after cutting

After the cuttings are done, you need to water them immediately and cover them with a film to keep them moist and warm, so that they can take root as soon as possible and increase the chance of survival.

2. Seed propagation

Its mature seeds are harvested from June to July every year. First, harvest its cuttings, then place them indoors and let them dry naturally. After about 10 days, its peel will start to become brittle. At this time, you can rub it with your hands and blow it with the wind to take out the seeds inside. Then you can sow in spring or autumn. The best medium for sowing is peat soil with a small amount of perlite added. Then moisten it with water and sprinkle the seeds in. After planting, cover it with a film and spray water appropriately. Seedlings will grow after a week.
