How to care for lemons in winter

Is lemon afraid of freezing?

Lemon is afraid of freezing. It likes warmth, is shade-tolerant, not cold-tolerant, and afraid of heat. It is suitable for planting in subtropical areas. The average annual temperature for lemon to grow properly is between 17-19℃.

Therefore, when winter comes, we can apply an appropriate amount of lime water on the trunk of the lemon tree, which has a certain insulation effect. We can also move it indoors for maintenance and control the temperature above 5°C, which will help the lemon tree to safely overwinter and prevent leaves from falling off in winter.

How to care for lemons in winter

1. Watering

Lemons grow slowly in winter, so you need to reduce the amount and frequency of watering the plants at this time, but water must not accumulate at the bottom of the pot, and watering should not affect the differentiation and germination of the plants.

2. Soil

Lemon has strong adaptability to soil and can grow in fertile and well-drained soil, whether sandy or clay. If you want it to grow more vigorously, it is best to use humus soil and slightly acidic soil.

3. Sunbathing

Lemon likes a sunny and warm environment. It is best to grow it in the sun in winter, and the minimum temperature at night should be controlled above 5℃, so that it can survive the winter smoothly.

4. Temperature

The temperature in winter is very low. If the temperature can be controlled well, the lemon flowers can be kept. Its appropriate growth temperature is between 20 and 30 degrees. The temperature in winter must be kept above 10 degrees so that more flowers can bloom.

Precautions for lemon cultivation in winter

1. Before entering winter, lemons need to prune off old and weak branches, and prune off dense branches, which can reduce nutrient consumption, improve the air permeability of the plants, and ensure safe wintering.

2. Lemon likes breathable pots. It is best to use clay pots, which is conducive to the growth of the plant. In winter, the plant needs to be moved into a warm environment to avoid being blown by the cold wind, so that it can survive the winter.
