How to grow kudzu vine to achieve high yield?

Pueraria lobata, also known as Pueraria root , Pueraria lobata vine, etc., is one of the common traditional Chinese medicinal materials that can be used as both medicine and food, and has a long history of cultivation in China. So how to grow kudzu vine to achieve high yield? Let’s learn more about it below.

1. Site selection and land preparation

Pueraria lobata is suitable for planting in sandy loam with deep soil, loose and fertile soil, sunny and well-drained. Before winter, deep plow the soil to 30 cm and apply 2000-3000 kg of farmyard manure in combination with tillage. In the spring of the second year, the soil is turned over again, the clods are broken up, and the soil is raked and leveled to make ridges about 1.2 meters wide with furrows about 30 centimeters between ridges.

2. Seedling selection

Select relatively sturdy vines that are disease-free and have full buds from the harvested kudzu vines . One month before planting, cut the seedlings into small sections, each section should have 1-2 nodes, and insert them into the soil. After it sprouts, you can transplant it.

3. Transplanting points

Before transplanting, it is necessary to sprinkle a certain amount of water in the soil layer where the Pueraria lobata seedlings are transplanted to ensure that the soil layer has a certain humidity. During the transplanting process, the Pueraria lobata seedlings should be inserted at an angle to ensure that the buds of the seedlings face upward, which provides convenience for subsequent management.

4. Pay attention to seedling supplement

After transplanting, the survival status of the plants should be checked in time, and any missing seedlings should be replanted as soon as possible. It is best to use seedlings with kudzu blocks for seedling replacement. When there is a shortage of seedlings, you can also use the layering method to press the lower stems of the seedlings next to the missing seedlings into the soil nearby.

5. Build a trellis to guide vines

Set up a wooden pole every 2-3 meters between two rows, connect the poles with wire, tie bamboo poles or wire between the ridges to facilitate climbing. When the seedlings are 30 cm tall, the vines can be guided onto the racks. This can minimize the contact between the kudzu vines and the ground, which is not only beneficial to the expansion of the kudzu roots, but also can improve the photosynthesis of the kudzu.

6. Intertillage and weeding

Adhere to the principle of "early, small and complete weeding", carry out chemical weeding once before weeds germinate in early spring, manual weeding once in May and June, and weeding once in August and October.

7. Topdressing tips

Pueraria lobata does not require much fertilizer and should be fertilized about 3 times a year. In April, the green fertilizer is mainly decomposed human manure. In July, 40-50 kg of imported compound fertilizer is applied as root enlargement fertilizer. After the leaves fall, winter fertilizer is applied, mainly farmyard manure.

8. Pest and disease control

Pueraria lobata does not have many diseases and pests, and newly planted fields generally have fewer diseases and pests and do not require the use of pesticides. The main diseases include damping-off, anthracnose and downy mildew, which can be controlled with carbendazim or cypermethrin solution.

In general, when planting kudzu, you should fully consider key points such as site selection and preparation, transplanting methods, field management, and pest and disease control to ensure that the plants can grow healthily and produce high yields.
