How to make azalea take root quickly by cuttings

How to make azalea take root quickly by cuttings

Rhododendrons are highly ornamental and are usually propagated by cuttings. Choose branches suitable for cuttings, insert them into the soil after a series of treatments, and wait for a period of time. After they take root, move them to a pot. With careful care, you can harvest a pot of rhododendrons.

Rhododendron cutting time

The time for rhododendron cuttings is in spring and autumn. If it is to be done in spring, the approximate time is around May. The cuttings of western azalea are generally between the end of May and the beginning of June. The cuttings of hairy azalea can be done in early to mid-June, and the cuttings of summer azalea are mostly done in mid-to-late June. If it is done in autumn, it should be done in October.

Azalea cutting method

1. Choose a strong and well-growing azalea, select the lush branches and leaves that grow upward and cut them off from the roots, leaving 2-3 leaves on top and cutting off the rest. After pruning, tie up the branches and soak them in warm water for half an hour.

2. It is best to use fertile, loose, well-drained slightly acidic soil for azalea cuttings. Prepare peat soil, garden soil, and coconut coir, and mix them evenly in a ratio of 4:3:3 as the culture soil.

3. Poke a few small holes in the prepared potting soil, insert the soaked branches into the holes, and press them slightly with your fingers. If the ambient temperature is low, you can cover it with plastic film. After cuttings, water them enough and put them in a cool place.

Rooting of Azalea Cuttings

After the azalea is cut, water it thoroughly and place it in a place with scattered light to wait for rooting. Water it more often half a month after cutting, and once every 1-2 days in the later stage. New roots will grow after about 21 days, and then you can move it to a bright place and bask in the sun.
