How to grow African big leaf banyan

How to grow African big leaf banyan

1. Breeding environment

1. Watering: African big-leaf banyan likes a humid growing environment. During the growth stage, it is necessary to ensure sufficient water and keep the soil moist at all times. It should be watered more in summer. The temperature is lower in winter, so it is best to control the amount of watering. If water accumulates in the potting soil, it will cause the roots to rot.

2. Light: It has a certain shade tolerance and is suitable for growing in a bright environment with diffuse light. It cannot be exposed to too strong light for a long time, as it can easily burn its leaves. If it grows in an overly dark environment, it will cause leaf fall.

3. Temperature: It needs a growing environment of 20-25℃. It can withstand certain high temperatures but is not cold-resistant. Therefore, the temperature should be adjusted appropriately in winter. Too low a temperature will cause the leaves to fall off.

2. Breeding Methods

Cutting propagation: Generally carried out in February-March or September-October, choose 2-3 year old hard branches as cuttings, control the length to 15-30 cm, insert it obliquely into the soil, then water it thoroughly to ensure a certain humidity. Be careful not to accumulate water and ventilate properly. If it is spring cuttings, it can be transplanted in August-September. If it is autumn cuttings, it can be transplanted in April-May of the second year.

3. Common pests and diseases

1. Diseases: African big-leaf banyan may suffer from leaf spot disease, powdery mildew or chlorosis. After being infected by the disease, the diseased branches and leaves should be pruned and burned to avoid secondary infection, and drugs should be used for prevention and control.

2. Pests: Mainly scale insects. Once discovered, they should be captured manually in time, or sprayed with dimethoate emulsifiable concentrate or dichlorvos.
