How to sow sundew

How to sow sundew

Sowing Sundew Seeds

The seeds of sundew are very small and black, so be careful when opening the package, otherwise the seeds may be wasted. Sprinkle the seeds in the package evenly on the surface of the substrate without covering the surface with soil. (If some seeds stick to the packaging, just scrape them off)

Drosera sowing medium

It is recommended to use finely crushed sphagnum moss as the substrate, among which live sphagnum moss can better improve the germination rate. Add water to the prepared substrate, wet it and place it in a container for later use.

Drosera sowing pot

To sow Drosera, you can use an ordinary flower pot and fill the pot with the substrate. Use the pot immersion method, place the flower pot in a basin or glass jar filled with pure water until the surface of the substrate is moist. If it is not completely wet, you can spray it with a spray.

Things to note when planting sundews

Water spray

Mist the sundews with a spray, being careful to spray carefully or you might wash the seeds away. Then place the flower pot on the inside of a windowsill where sunlight can reach it. If you use a water basin to plant, you need to open a cover on the top and cover it with plastic to maintain humidity. Remember to stay hydrated at all times.

Germination and emergence

Under extremely good conditions, sundew can germinate in about 30 days and emerge in about 15 days.

transplant

If the sundew grows too densely, it can be transplanted with soil. Be careful not to damage the roots when transplanting.

illumination

Most sundews prefer sunlight and are resistant to direct exposure to the sun. They can be placed on a windowsill with sufficient light, and try to expose them to direct sunlight for more than four hours a day. If the Northern Territory sundew receives direct sunlight all day, the color of the sundew will be very bright. Less than four hours of direct sunlight may result in poor growth of sundews. It should be noted that the sundew should not be deprived of direct sunlight for a long time, otherwise it will die. But if you are planting love-shaped sundews and forked-core sundews, you should be careful to avoid direct sunlight and place them in a cool, dim-light place. Because they grow in woodlands, the light is weak. Therefore, the care method is different from that of the Northern Territory Sundew, which requires direct sunlight.

humidity

Sundew does not have high requirements for humidity, and it can be kept at 40%-90%. But in the hot summer, the humidity cannot be sustained at around 90%, otherwise the stems and leaves will rot. If stem and leaf rot occurs, please ventilate in time.
