When to prune hibiscus

When to prune hibiscus

1. Pruning when seedlings are young

1. When pruning seedlings, the shape can be determined according to personal preference, but pruning is necessary. If you let it grow, it is likely to cause its branches to grow ugly, and the main branches and side branches will not be obvious, which will not be good for viewing.

2. If we want to prune it into a small tree with a single trunk, we can pinch off the top when it is only 15 centimeters, and then leave two or three new shoots as the backbone. When the new shoots grow to 10 centimeters, pinch off the top again. In this way, the tree will have a very obvious shape that year.

2. Pruning after growth

1. This requires pruning and shaping the plant according to its appearance. If the branches are relatively short, we can only cut off those branches that grow unreasonably. If the branches grow densely, we need to cut off part of them. This way, light transmission and ventilation will be better, and the plant will grow healthier.

2. If the tree is not growing well, or its lower part is bare, or it grows too tall, we should re-prune it during its dormant period.

3. In fact, if we leave two or three side branches or buds at the base of its side branches and then cut off the top branches, we can make it shorter and grow a more beautiful and strong crown.

3. Pruning after flowering

When pruning after flowering, cut off the withered flowers that consume nutrients to allow it to bloom better. Strong pruning is usually performed on plants that have already flowered.

4. Pruning of old plants

We can prune old plants, usually heavily pruning them every one to two years. Doing so can make new branches sprout quickly and make the plant stronger and shorter.
