How to propagate Agave giltendron

How to propagate Agave giltendron

1. Methods of reproduction

1. Division

It is easy for it to grow small side buds at the roots. When they grow to a certain size, you can remove them or cut them with a knife, and then place them in the soil to let them take root. This is usually done in spring, preferably when repotting in April. When you dig it out, you can take off the suckers on it and replant it.

2. Flowering and reproduction

Under normal circumstances, adult flowers of this type will grow flowers, and a very tall flower arrow will grow at its growth point. After the flower withers, many seedlings will grow at the top of the flower arrow. You can just peel it off and plant it in the soil. As long as the roots have grown out, you can cut it off directly and it will survive.

3. Planting seeds

It can only produce fruit through cross-pollination. If the ripe fruits are planted in April or May, buds will sprout in about two weeks. Its seedlings grow relatively slowly, and the growth rate will accelerate after they become mature. However, only old trees that have lived for more than ten years can bear flowers and fruits.

2. Daily maintenance

1. Soil

You can use rotten leaves, coarse sand and ordinary garden soil as nutrients for potted plants. Fertilize it once a month during its growing period, and increase watering in summer to make the leaves greener and more tender. If the sun is very strong, you need to give it some shade. After autumn, its growth becomes slow, and you need to control its watering, ensure a dry environment, and stop fertilizing. If it is used as a potted plant for viewing, the buds should be removed in time so that its shape will be more beautiful.

2. Environment

You don't have to worry too much in the tropics, but in other temperature zones you need to move it to a greenhouse in winter to protect it safely through the winter. Wait until the Qingming Festival of the following year and move it outside. In the summer, provide it with appropriate shade from the sun. During its growing season, keep the soil in the pot moist. When watering, do not sprinkle water on the leaves, otherwise it will get brown spot disease. As new leaves grow, remove the old and yellow leaves below.

3. Pests and diseases

It often suffers from diseases such as leaf spot, and can be sprayed with thiophanate-methyl wettable powder. If there are pests such as scale insects, you can use DDT to spray and kill them.
