Sugarcane planting time and maturity time

Sugarcane planting time and maturity time

Sugarcane is grown in Fujian, Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, Sichuan, Yunnan and other places in China. It has a long growth cycle and generally takes 8-10 months to mature. Below, I will introduce the sowing time and maturity time of sugarcane. Let’s take a look.

1. Sugarcane sowing time and maturity time

1. Sowing time

Spring sowing: generally between February and April. The specific time varies from region to region, but it is recommended to be no later than April. In spring, as the temperature rises and rainfall increases, sugarcane seeds are easier to germinate, which is beneficial to the growth and development of the plants.

Autumn sowing: mainly carried out from August to September. It is recommended that autumn sowing of sugarcane be started in late August to ensure that the seeds germinate under suitable temperature and humidity conditions. At the same time, sugarcane sown in autumn can form a certain root system and stems before winter, which is conducive to growth and yield in the coming year.

2. Maturity time

Southern Region: Due to the warmer climate, sugarcane grows faster. In southern provinces such as Guangdong, Guangxi, and Hainan, sugarcane is usually planted in March and April each year. After an 8-10-month growing period, it matures and is available on the market around November and December.

Northern region: Due to the colder climate, the growth rate of sugarcane is relatively slow. In northern provinces such as Henan, Hebei, and Shandong, sugarcane planting time is usually delayed to April or May, and the maturity time is correspondingly delayed to around January or February of the following year.

2. Sugarcane Planting Methods

1. Variety selection

Select sugarcane varieties suitable for the local area, such as Guitang No. 42, Guiliu 05136, Guitang No. 44, Guitang No. 55, Yunzhe 081609, Yunzhe 0551, Yuetang No. 61, Zhongtang No. 3, etc.

2. Deep ploughing and shallow planting

Mechanized tillage requires two plows and two harrows, with a depth of 50 centimeters. The soil must be loose and the depth of the sugarcane furrow must be 30 centimeters. The depth of covering the sugarcane seeds with soil is generally about 5 cm.

3. Wide rows and dense planting

The row spacing for sugarcane planting is required to be 90-100 cm, which is conducive to ventilation and post-planting field management. Sow 5-6 sugarcane seeds every 100 cm in the sugarcane furrow, and sow 3000-3500 double- bud sugarcane seeds per mu.

4. Apply enough basal fertilizer

Use 1000-2000 kg of farmyard manure per mu. Mix 100 kg of superphosphate, 25 kg of urea and 15 kg of potassium chloride, compost it for 7-15 days and then apply it to the sugarcane planting furrow.

5. Seed soaking

Choose plump, pest-free and undamaged double-bud seedlings, and soak them in clean water or 2% lime water for 1-2 days. This can improve the drought resistance of the sugarcane seeds and also eliminate pests and diseases.

6. Seeding method

The sugarcane seeds should be placed flat in the planting ditch with the buds on both sides. When covering the seeds with soil, first press the seedlings lightly into the soil and then cover with soil to facilitate rooting.

The above is an introduction to the sowing time and maturity time of sugarcane. The sowing time of sugarcane varies from region to region and is generally carried out in spring or autumn. Spring sowing is mainly from February to April, and autumn sowing is from August to September.
