When is sugarcane planted?

Sugarcane is a tall, solid perennial herb that is mainly grown in tropical and subtropical regions. It is rich in sugar and water. In addition, it also contains various vitamins, fats, proteins, organic acids, calcium, iron and other substances that are very beneficial to human metabolism. Let’s learn together when to plant sugarcane?

1. Planting time

Usually from February to April in spring, or from August to September in autumn. For spring planting, it is recommended to start no later than April, while for autumn planting, it is recommended to start from late August. Sugarcane planted in spring generally matures between May and July, while sugarcane planted in autumn is harvested in December. Sugarcane prefers to grow in areas with a large temperature difference between winter and summer, and is widely planted in Guangdong, Hainan, Sichuan and Yunnan in China.

2. Deepen your cultivation

The tillage depth needs to reach 50 cm, ensuring the soil is loose, and the planting trench depth is about 30 cm.

3. Shallow planting

The depth of covering the sugarcane seeds with soil should be controlled at about 5 cm.

4. Wide line spacing

The planting row spacing should be 90 to 100 centimeters to facilitate ventilation, light penetration and field management.

5. Close planting

Sow 5 to 6 sugarcane seeds per 100 cm planting furrow, and 3,000 to 3,500 double -sprout sugarcane seeds per mu.

6. Apply basal fertilizer

Apply 1,000 to 2,000 kg of farmyard manure per mu, mixed with 100 kg of superphosphate, 25 kg of urea and 15 kg of potassium chloride. Mix and compost for 7 to 15 days before applying to the planting ditch.

7. Seed soaking

Select healthy and plump double-bud seedlings and soak them in clean water or 2% lime water for 1 to 2 days to enhance drought resistance and kill diseases and pests.

8. Planting seeds

Place the sugarcane seeds flat in the planting ditch with the buds facing both sides. When covering with soil, press the seedlings lightly to facilitate rooting.

9. Control underground pests

When planting, use 2 to 3 kg of Miler per acre to prevent underground pests.

10. Chemical weed control

Before sugarcane sprouts, use 25 ml of 40% atrazine plus 200 ml of amine per acre, add 50 to 60 kg of water and spray on the soil surface to control weed growth.

The above is an introduction to the planting time and key points of sugarcane. As an annual crop, sugarcane is planted from February and begins to mature and be harvested in November. The entire growth cycle takes about 9 months. Winter is the best time to eat sugarcane because after the dry climate in autumn and the blowing of the north wind, the moisture in the sugarcane evaporates, making the sugarcane taste particularly sweet in winter.
