How to prune large-leaf gardenia

How to prune large-leaf gardenia

1. Purpose of pruning

(1) Because this plant has a relatively strong ability to germinate. Well, if you don't do regular pruning, it may cause many branches to overlap and become very messy. This will result in an ugly shape of the tree. This is what we often call the phenomenon of excessive growth.

(2) Second, if the plant is not pruned, some of its branches will not grow very thick and will appear weak. This will make the plant look thin and weak. Moreover, if you miss the best time to trim your hair, the effect will not be good no matter how you trim it later.

(3) The third question is about flower buds. If you don't prune, the number of flower buds may decrease and some branches may not be able to produce buds.

2. Specific methods

(1) For shaping purposes, only three main branches should be left. Cut off all the side branches that sprout from the base of the three selected branches. By doing this, you can allow side branches to grow from the upper and middle parts.

(2) Next, let’s talk about the method in spring. At this time, do not cut the side branches. This is done to encourage it to bloom. However, after the flowers have bloomed and faded, the flowering branches need to be pruned. This can effectively promote the growth of new branches below.

(3) When the newly grown branches have about three nodes, they need to be topped off. Also, it is best to cut off all the buds at the base. Otherwise, if all these side buds are allowed to sprout, the crown of the tree will be very dense and look ugly.

(4) The last one is around August. During this period, there are some second growth shoots. For them, you also have to pinch off the tips and don't let them continue to grow.
