How to propagate Aspidistra

How to propagate Aspidistra

1. Division propagation

This plant is very suitable for home cultivation and can be propagated at home using the division method. There are many advantages to propagation by division, such as higher survival rate and easier operation, but at the same time, many things need to be paid attention to, including time, method and maintenance.

2. Time

The division of this plant is usually done when the temperature gradually rises. Generally, it is done in spring, when the temperature rises and the new buds have not yet sprouted. It is also the time to change the pot, so the operation is relatively simple. Generally speaking, the soil begins to recover in January and February, and you can start dividing the plants after thawing is complete.

3. Operation

Remove the mother plant from the pot and remove any excess soil, separating the roots as much as possible without damaging them. Use a sharp knife to split the plant in half, making sure each plant has ample roots. Keep 3-5 suitable leaves on each plant and trim off the rest to help the plant survive.

4. Disinfection

After division, since the plant body is relatively weak and very susceptible to infection, it is necessary to disinfect it. Use a 1500-fold dilution of thiophanate-methyl solution and soak the plant in it for five minutes. After taking it out, the plant needs to be dried first before any other processing can be done. You can also use chlorothalonil immediately after potting to prevent viruses from invading the plants.

5. Put it in the basin

This plant is not suitable for growing in too humid places, so you need to add a water filter layer in the pot and then put the plant in it. There are many substrates to choose from for potting, and you can choose according to your own conditions. Generally speaking, as long as it ensures sufficient nutrition, good hydrophobicity and ventilation, it will be fine. It needs to be watered once after potting. If it has not been disinfected before, the roots should be irrigated in time and placed in a shaded place for maintenance.

6. Management

After division, the plant needs to be watered thoroughly. Since the roots are damaged, it will take 3-4 weeks to recover, so water less during this period to prevent root rot.
