How to save seeds of white melon

How to get white melon seeds

White melon is also called Shao melon, Sheng melon, Yue melon, Crisp melon, Tian melon, etc. It belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family. The white melon has a smooth skin, is juicy and crispy. It can be eaten raw, cooked, or made into soups. It has seeds. In order to increase the yield and quality of the fruit, you should choose high-quality varieties.

How to keep seeds of white melon

The seeds of white melon can be treated with heat, that is, soaking them in warm water to sterilize them without causing damage to the seeds. This method can be divided into hot water soaking (wet heat) and dry heat treatment (dry heat). Among them, hot water soaking was used earlier, but dry heat treatment is more effective and causes less damage to the plants.

Keep the seeds of white melon

For example, if we find a certain variety of white melon that is very delicious, we will save the seeds inside the melon and plant it for more than five years. We can basically separate it from its parent plant, and the melons of the parent plant are generally more delicious, but the melons will not all look the same.

How to collect seeds of white melon

Choose seeds that are full enough as seed materials, let them mature naturally and then cut and harvest them. If the seeds are too long, you can remove part of them now and leave only the last ones.

White melon seed preservation and storage

There are two main ways to store white melon seeds: dry storage and wet storage. The dry storage method is to dry the seeds completely and then store them in a dry environment. Seeds with low moisture content are suitable for this storage method.

The wet storage method is to store seeds in a low temperature, humid and ventilated environment. This storage method can help break the dormancy of seeds and stimulate germination.

White Melon Seed Planting

White melon likes a warm environment and is not cold-resistant. It is generally cultivated in seasons with a soil temperature of 15 degrees and an air temperature of above 20 degrees. In Guangdong, it can be sown from April to August. Spring-planted white melons are generally sown directly in April. The time should not be too early, as they are susceptible to frost damage, and the germination is slow and uneven, affecting the fruit yield.

White melons can be harvested in time after they are ripe. After taking out the seeds, they should be germinated and then sown in loose, fertile, well-drained soil. Water them thoroughly once. If the temperature is low, cover them with straw to keep them warm and moist. They will germinate in about 7-10 days.
