How to propagate Gardenia serrata

How to propagate Gardenia serrata

Cutting propagation

This method is quite common to us, but because temperature has a great influence on the survival of seedlings, we should choose the time according to the local temperature. Friends who live in the north can choose to do it in October or November. Although the outdoor temperature drops sharply at this time, there is heating in the north and it can provide a greenhouse, so this is a better time. Friends who live in the southern part of the country can choose to do it in April.

The cuttings should be selected at 2 years old, as those that are too young will not survive. Cut it to about 10cm, cut off the lower half of the leaves and then disinfect it. After the operation is completed, it is best to apply a little rooting powder on the lower part, so that the temperature is maintained at 20-24℃, and roots will grow in half a month. When the seedlings start to grow, they can be potted, so that they can bloom in another two years.

Layering propagation

This method is also quite common. In April, choose disease-free branches with better growth, but they should be longer, about 20-30cm in length. If there are three-pronged branches, you can get three seedlings at a time. Generally, it will take root within a month. If it is well maintained, it can be separated from the mother plant in June and planted directly in a pot in the spring of the following year.

sowing

This method is relatively slow, and it will take at least the third year for it to bloom after success, so friends who meet the first two conditions should try to choose the first two methods. Especially for friends who choose potted plants in the north, it is not easy to get seeds, and it will take a year for them to germinate after planting. Friends who choose this method should pay attention to choose fuller seeds.

If you want to sow in spring, you can sow before or after the rain, so that the probability of survival will be higher. If you choose autumn, you can choose the autumnal equinox, when the temperature and other conditions will be more suitable.
