How hops are propagated

Seed propagation

If you use seeds for planting, you need to carefully screen them before sowing. Because the seed cortex is hard, most seeds cannot develop well. You need to choose seeds with well-developed and full grains for sowing. The most suitable temperature for sowing is about 20℃. At that time, soak the selected seeds in water and then sow them. After that, ensure sufficient water and apply fertilizer once or twice during the growth of the seedlings.

However, the germination rate of hop seeds is extremely low, so this method is generally not used for reproduction.

Cutting method

Underground stem cuttings

This method of reproduction using underground stems is simple and efficient, and is currently a very common breeding method. Usually, part of the underground stem is taken out for cultivation when cutting the buds. New seedlings are usually cut from the lower half of the underground mother stem. The underground stems in this part are generally stronger and fuller, and have a higher survival rate. The cut length is about 12 cm, and there must be at least two opposite bud nodes. Then this part of the underground stem is directly used for cuttings and planting.

Green branch cuttings

Before the peak flowering period, usually in June, young branches with opposite bud nodes are picked from the hop plants and directly planted as mother plants. This method of reproduction has a very high survival rate and is also a more commonly used breeding method.

Bud cultivation method

When cutting the buds, take out the plump and strong buds with some roots, generally about 10 cm in length, and then plant the buds directly. During the cultivation process, also pay attention to keeping the soil moist.

Cultivation methods and precautions

The best time to breed hops is generally April, and the peak flowering period is from July to August. The best cultivation soil is a thick layer of soil that is loose, fertile, and has good air permeability. Hops prefer cool weather and are cold-resistant, with the best suitable temperature being 14-25℃. This flower likes light very much, and long-term sunshine can promote its healthy growth. It is worth noting that hops must not lack water during the growing period and before wintering, otherwise it will have an adverse effect on its growth.
