How to propagate Magnolia officinalis

How to propagate Magnolia officinalis

Seed propagation

1. Collect seeds

The seeds can be collected when they are mature. The seed maturity period of Magnolia officinalis is the same as that of most plants, which is in the season of clear sky and fresh air, usually between October and November. The fruits of Magnolia officinalis will change from green to black purple and crack to reveal red fruits. At this time, you can pick the fruits, then expose them to the hot sun for about three days, and then take out the seeds. You can screen and only pick the dark black and plump seeds. Of course, if you don't want to go through the trouble, you can collect all of them. Unqualified seeds will not grow into seedlings anyway.

2. Processing seeds

Place the collected seeds indoors and pile them thicker, about 10 centimeters. Wait until the red surface turns black, then soak them in clean water. After two days, start rubbing the seeds. Wait until the skin is rubbed off, then wash them and dry them in a sunny place. Clean the dried seeds with a special disinfectant, and then store them in damp sand. Pay attention to the height, which should not exceed half a meter. Check them from time to time during storage. If the sand is too white, it means it is very dry. Water it and turn it over.

3. Planting

It is not necessary to sow in spring, it can also be done in autumn, the second half of November or February to March.

The second layering propagation can be done in autumn or spring, in the first half of November or in February. You should choose mature trees with good growth and more than ten years old. Choose a better sucker branch and follow professional methods, and it will be ready in the second year.

Cutting propagation

Generally, cutting propagation is carried out in early spring, in February or March. You can choose stronger one- to two-year-old Magnolia officinalis branches, preferably about one centimeter thick, cut the branches into 20-centimeter cuttings, and then insert them into the seedbed. The method of raising seedlings is the same as that of seed propagation, and they can be transplanted into the yard in the second year.
