Geranium Pruning Time

Geranium Pruning Time

When to prune geraniums

When growing geraniums, generally after the summer, there will be some damage on the plants, and some may even lose leaves severely. This is the best time to prune them.

At this time, the new buds of the geranium plants will grow very quickly and will recover quickly after pruning. Pruning geraniums at the end of summer can also have a better shaping effect.

In winter, we generally cannot prune geraniums, because if we prune them at this time, some of the new branches that grow in the autumn will easily be cut off, and it will not be conducive to flowering next year (because the branches grown in autumn have been pruned, the geraniums will sprout again, but if not pruned, the new branches grown in autumn will be stronger when they bloom and the flowering will be better). It is easier to overwinter if you keep the branches and leaves in winter.

Tips for pruning geraniums

Generally, geraniums should not be pruned during their peak growth period, as this may cause the flower buds to be cut off.

Daily pruning is actually quite common. It usually involves pruning branches, pruning diseased branches, weak branches, etc. of geraniums, but don't cut too hard.

Rejuvenation pruning is also very important. It is usually carried out after the geranium has been cultivated for more than two years. At this time, the plant is aging and the branches are beginning to become woody. It can be rejuvenated through pruning.
