How to propagate peony

How to propagate peony

Propagation by division

Division should be carried out between September and October. Dig out the entire root, shake it gently to remove the sticky soil, and then break it apart. It can be divided into multiple pieces, but each piece must have a root neck, 1 to 2 new buds, and 3 to 4 small root pieces.

To prevent wound rot, disinfect the wound before planting. Before planting, it must be placed in moist river sand for germination. New roots will grow in about 20 days, but the sand must be kept moist during this period and it must not be placed in the sun. Do not bury the plants too deep when transplanting, otherwise it will affect the germination and growth of the leaves, but too shallow will not be conducive to the plants absorbing water and nutrients.

Seed propagation

If you choose seeds from cultivated plants, it is best to do so in June each year, when the seeds will be fully mature. After picking the seeds, store them in a cool and dry place and they can be sown in autumn.

The seeds must be allowed to germinate before sowing. You can soak the seeds in water for a day and a night, then take them out and place them in a constant temperature box. The germination temperature should be between 10 and 15 degrees. Small sprouts will appear in about 20 days. Temperatures that are too high or too low will affect the germination time and may even prevent seeds from germinating.

When the small buds grow 3 to 4 leaves, they can be transplanted and planted, which is around December to January.

In order to cultivate better plants, people often use seed propagation, which is relatively simple and will make the growth and flowering of plants stronger and more colorful in the later stage.
